Bubblegum Crisis is an anime TV series from the Japanese animation studios Artmic & Artland that ran for eight episodes from 1987 to 1991.
In 2032, Japan is recovering from a devastating earthquake that has split the culture and led to an increase in crime. The Knightsabers are a group of women who act as vigilantes to protect poor communities. They are led by Sylia Stingray (Jemila Ericson) who recruits singer Priscilla "Priss" S. Asagiri (Sinda Nichols/)Joyce Leigh Bowden), Linna Yamazaki (Elizabeth Becka), and Russian immigrant and spy in law enforcement Nene Romanova (Susan Grillo) wear their mech suits to fight crime. Sylvia's younger brother Mackie (Frank Trimble) acts as their mechanic. The team is approached by law enforcement to help them combat "boomers" aka Cyberoids, weapons that have been compromised and are running loose in Japan.
Okay, Mackie is a total pervert who likes to leer at the women as they change into their mech-suits. Fortunately, he frequently gets beaten for his indiscretion which is a good thing.
The character designs are pretty good. All of the women and their suits look very unique and that goes for the enemies as well. Despite being started in the 80s, this anime stands out in how they battle and how the action sequences are drawn. It was definitely ahead of its time.
There are a few unanswered questions about the show. Why did Genom want their Cyberoids to get loose in the city? How does this help their company? That is never really answered and it remained lingering.
That being said, the show is actually pretty good. Each woman is given an opportunity to shine and they are all unique in their motivations. It tells of a group of women who want to save their country from a threat and how that threat affects everyday citizens. It was a good metaphor for how the government overreaches and works with private corporations to breed conspiracies. It was bold, ahead of its time, and a lot of fun to watch.
